At PV Squared Solar, our mission has always been about more than clean energy. We believe in building renewable energy systems that sustain the health of our region; from the power on our rooftops to the food on our tables. That’s why we’re proud to support Grow Food Northampton, a local nonprofit working to ensure that everyone in our community has access to fresh, healthy, locally grown food.
In recent months, federal cuts to SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) benefits have left many local families struggling to make ends meet. These cuts have an immediate impact on children and working families across Hampshire County forcing parents to make difficult choices between groceries, heating, and transportation. As a worker-owned cooperative rooted in this community, PV Squared cannot ignore those realities.
Grow Food Northampton fills a critical gap. They manage 121 acres of protected farmland that support local farmers, operate community gardens where hundreds of residents grow their own food, and run farm share and farmers’ market programs that double the purchasing power of SNAP recipients through a local “SNAP Match” program. This not only improves food security but also strengthens our local agricultural economy and reduces the distance between farm and table.
Our cooperative sees this as an extension of the same values that drive our solar work: local resilience, equity, and sustainability. Just as solar energy helps households become more independent and less vulnerable to volatile energy costs, Grow Food Northampton helps families become more food secure and connected to their local food systems.
When we invest in local food access, we invest in the health of our entire region. Children who have enough to eat can focus in school. Families that can afford fresh produce are healthier. Farmers who can sell directly to their neighbors stay viable. And our community as a whole becomes stronger and more self-reliant.
PV Squared’s fundraising effort for Grow Food Northampton is one small but meaningful way we can help close the gap left by federal benefit cuts. Every contribution helps provide fresh food for families who need it most; and helps keep local farms thriving in the process.
Powering a sustainable future means powering people, too!!
