What does NABCEP certification mean to solar installers and their clients? (An interview with pv Magazine USA, 2025)

According to worker-owner, Seth Mellen, a NABCEP (North American Board of Certified Energy Practitioners) certificate is “a feather in the cap“. Mellen, who holds a NABCEP PV Installer Professional (PVIP) certification, spoke about how important certification is for the reputation of the company, especially in a state like Massachusetts, which requires no solar-specific licensing.
“It’s easy for a company to say they’re good, but we specifically wanted to be able to point to third parties that say we’re good,” Mellen said.
He noted that having certified employees in every stage of the business builds trust in the relationship between the company and the customer.
Daniel Berry, a PV Squared Solar worker-owner with a PV Technical Sales (PVTS) certification, noted how important accreditation is for their sales team, especially in an industry with a broad spectrum of sales practices, some of which give the industry a bad reputation.
“A lot of layers go into a proposal,” Berry noted, as new products, incentives and financing options emerge all the time. Berry stated that NABCEP’s certification and continuing education requirements allow PV Squared’s sales team to speak knowledgeably to potential customers about what they are offering. “Certification comes up frequently in sales discussions”, he said.
